What We Do (Part 1)

01) We Stand Up
We let people know where we stand on issues. We are catalytic and transformative—Salt & Light.
02) We Show Up
We are a persevering prophetic presence advocating for love and justice in our community. We show up on street corners, at the School Board, City Commissions, and City Council meetings, choosing to engage in meaningful and necessary trouble.
03) We Strengthen and Speak Up
We prepare ourselves through education and training to Stand Up, Show Up, and Speak Up. We speak out through protests, emails, phone calls, and online posts, among other ways we make our voices heard.
04) We Build Community
We are united in this effort, with PP&J (People of Peace & Justice) members joining with other organizations (See list of partners) in our community. We may not always agree on everything, and that is okay.
Impact Stories
The strethening of the deescalation policy of OPD
- We successfully persuaded the new Chief of Police to adopt an enforceable de-escalation policy. This was a year long process involving Oceanside Sanctuary, St. Johns, LiveFree and SDOP. This was the action that lead to my ongoing involvement in the workings of the city government of Oceanside.
Creation of the SOC
- We (Oceanside Sanctuary, St. Johns, LiveFree and SDOP) worked with the Police and Fire Commission to establish the Standing Oversight Committee. This committee was created to provide civilian oversight of public complaints received by the Oceanside Police and Fire departments. We were able to help give some structure and definition to the SOC. Our big win was getting the Police and Fire Commission to agree to contniue to work to improve the SOC. The evolution of the SOC continues to be a focus for us. One that is being met with great resistance.
The protests in Oceanside & Carlsbad
- PP&J started with a handful of protesters on a rainy Friday and has now seen thousands attend the protests we have hosted along with Indivisible 49 and DEMCCO (see partner page). We were invited to participate on a nationwide streaming broadcast along with US Senator Cory Booker and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. We have continued to work for the preservation of democracy, advocating for liberty and justice for all and calling out and fighting against policies and practices that dehumanize and put people on the margins at risk.
